Discover the cave

HISTORY

The first person to see the beautiful cave was the French archaeologist Gustavus Fuser in 1887 while excavating in ancient Mantineia. The first survey of the cave was carried out on August 20, 1892, by a Greek-French expedition led by the Arkadian engineer Nikolaos Siderides and two French engineers.

The publication of his study of the cave and the sinkholes of the area in the French scientific journal Spelunga in 1911 brings the cave to world attention. This publication is the most important Greek speleological article of the time and marks the beginning of the awakening of interest in the study of Greek caves. In 1974 a new Greek-French expedition was carried out under the leadership of I. Ioannou and a new part of the cave was discovered which was unknown to the first researchers.

In the cave, traces of old flooding and numerous fragments of human bones and skulls were found, covered by mud (half a metre thick) covering the cave floor. Lamps were also found that probably belong to the late Greek period (4th & 5th century AD).

The “Miracles” room presents the rarest colouring of lithic material of any other known Greek cave. Reds of fire, yellows of ochre and greenish-blue mixed with the off-white of stalactites, offer a unique spectacle of natural art.

Kapsia Cave is located 15 km away from Tripoli and 1.5 km from the village of Kapsia.

Experts have ranked it in the list of the 10 most remarkable caves of the Greek territory. It is located on the periphery of the closed geological basin of the Mantinean plateau and is connected to the complex system of natural sinkholes that characterize the water table. Among the findings of the cave are human bones and clay everyday utensils.
